  • Rude (and Fat) Awakenening

    panera logo

I'm a big Panera Bread fan. I usually go there about twice a week during my lunch break and get a sandwich or a salad. My sandwich of choice is the Sierra Turkey, but sometimes I opt for the Greek salad. (Asiago cheese is da shiz.)

I knew Panera wasn't really a low-calorie option because it uses "richer" ingredients. (Asiago cheese being one of them.) But come on - it's turkey, lettuce, some chipotle sauce and tomato. How fattening could it really be? So I went to the Panera website and was horrified to find this:

    panera

1,000 CALORIES?! ALMOST HALF OF THEM FROM FAT?! 85 PERCENT OF MY DAILY SODIUM INTAKE IN ONE EFFING SANDWICH?!!!! AND THIS DOESN'T EVEN INCLUDE THE BAG OF CHIPS WITH IT!!! I NEED TO STOP YELLING!!!

Looks like I'll be cutting down on what I thought was a fairly healthier alternative to Burger King or McDonald's, otherwise I'm going to be a big Panera fan in the literal sense. My advice to you: Go to a restaurant's website and look up your favorite food. You might be surprised as to what you're actually eating.

I had the exact same reaction when I found out about how healthy Chipotle wasn't. I feel for ya, man!

  • spokenfor@xanga

i know. we do that at work all the time. I used to eat at panera and chipotle once a week when I worked in Dallas, and I'm really glad I don't work in Dallas anymore. yeah their ingredients may be "natural" but that doesn't make it a diet friendly place to eat.

but gosh - I miss the fresh mozzerella pannini & the veggie burrito bowl. haha

  • awokenfatality@xanga

That's why I eat at Au Bon Pain instead. It's like a Panera Bread but with half the calories.

  • dan@xanga

Wow, no wonder it tastes so good! I bet a lot of the calories come from the chipotle sauce.

  • CanadianBroad@xanga

Yeah, it's surprising what they sneak into your food when you're not looking.

Even Subways "low fat" subs are only that way if you have no dressing at all on it, and no cheese. (Cheese is one of the fattiest things you can eat. And it's salty, too.)

    Sigh.

  • StewieIsMyHero@xanga

Yeah, I don't think I am going to be doing that. I will never be able to eat anywhere ever again. Or maybe I will... I'm a cow.

  • DuckTapeJourneyman@xanga

Wow, that's a lot of calories for something that sounds healthy.  Now I'll probably go online and look up what my favorite meals go for calorie-wise.

  • StewieIsMyHero@xanga

@CanadianBroad@xanga - I'm screwed. I LOVE cheese and eat it with probably 95% of the things I eat.

  • bluedreamer85@xanga

    *cries*...noooo deng it...

  • JessicaandTimtruelove@xanga

That is horrible! I can't believe it is 1000 calories!

  • Torri@xanga

this is why i dont like eating out and prefer to stay in and cook...

Portion size is one of the biggest killers when eating out.  People would be shocked to find out what a real portion size of something is.  We have gotten used to eating huge amounts of food and thus huge amounts of calories.  When people eat out, they expect huge portions and they lie to themselves and say it's just one meal when it's closer to their entire caloric needs for the day.

My first job was at a fast food place where they only had one size of fries, 3 oz, which is a proper portion.  People would get so pissed when they saw the small amount of fries they were getting with their order because they were so used to other places whose "small" order is closer to 6 oz and who offer sizes like super size.

While yummy foods do tend to be higher in fat because, let's face it, fat tastes good, if people at smaller portions, even of the good stuff, they'd be a lot better off.

  • AnonymousBloggingGirl@xanga

Wow, that's crazy...but is it large enough to split into two servings? THen that wouldn't be as horrible.  YOu know...like sometimes I eat out and just box up half of it and eat the other half as dinner or the next day?

But still 1000 calories for a sandwich is ridiculous.  That must be a big heap of a sandwich!

  • CanadianConspiracy@xanga

I've heard that about Panera before. It's a shame because they do market their food as being healthier.

A lot of places are weird like that. Like a McDonald's salad actually has more calories and fat than a big mac.

  • xxmusicxxfreak@xanga

    Wow.. that's nuts.
    I didn't know that.

  • laurenvw@xanga

    Hah, THAT is depressing. Yikes!

  • caliangel88006@xanga

that's the exact reason i dont look at food labels anymore. you should know though that thats just based on a 2000 calorie diet, each person has their own specifics (go to mypyramid.gov) in what they are suppose to eat..some people can actually eat up to 3000 if i remember correctly. so if you base it on your diet, if you can eat more than 2000 calories its actually a little better than what the package says.

  • christine

LOL!!! ahahahhaah i'd rather make my own... ahaha

  • Carolina17@xanga

yeah one of my friends works at Panera and now refuses to eat the stuff after actually seeing the nutrition info. She laughs at the people who come in talking about it being a 'healthy option'. Seriously, you could have a big mac for only 500some calories. Damn.

  • MochaSprinkle@xanga

I had no idea... maybe that's why it's so yummy :) Fat IS yummy after all!

  • ryu@xanga

Almost any food you don't eat at home is bad for you. EVEN SUBWAY.

  • hollowhopes@xanga

:O! I love Panera, but the bread bowl clam chowder I get there probably has more calories than most things you could get at McDonald's.

    Oh well.

  • wired_cynic@xanga

Everything's still frozen preserves no matter how "fresh" the food seems. One time during the morning shift, I remember seeing my co-worker carrying a laminated but frosty frozen rectangle that turned out to be one of the soups. They're just as good as buying Campbell's!

I don't know how anyone could eat any of Panera's sandwiches in one sitting. So did our customers. Most of them left abundant leftovers only to be thrown away all the time and wasting food kills me. 1) Extra money would've been saved if the portion sizes weren't so abundant and disposable, but with a franchise like Panera, they can probably afford it. 2) There are less fortunate people that could've appreciated leftovers (even though liability prevents us from sharing.) I read an article in the New York Times one day at how homeless people really do search the garbage from restaurants for leftover food. They get it out of their own accord. Therefore, they can't sue the facility if they get sick. So I would always split my order but still can't finish it. It saves me money and the pain of gluttony. A plus on saving money if I brought my own bottle of water/beverage.
